Toilets

As we entered the area where Eric lives, we were shocked to see these rows and rows of concrete "coffins". They are toilets yet to be installed. We found out that the company that contracted to do the sewage for these destroyed the make-shift outhouses the people had made for themselves.

Then they ran out of money, left the people with neither their old nor the new toilets. In other words, the residents are worse off than they were before. Here the toilets are 5 deep, in sight of the people who are supposed to have use of them.

This is the corner where the main road meets the first cross road. Always a reminder of the empty promises they live with daily.

"Folk Art" hand prints made with the red mud of the earth. Some large, some small, some neat, some messy...all an effort to create something out of nothing.

One day, as we were leaving, I saw these 2 men standing in the toilets talking to each other. These "coffins" protect them from the sun or rain, and offer something to lean against. This image really grabbed me!

One family tries to make a living by repairing shoes. This hand made sign directs those in need to the proper shack. Clever marketing as everyone has to leave the area by this road.

Kids were using the toilets as a place to play. One has a ball and the other a sparkler. They don't have gameboys to play with.

You can see a toilet in place behind the fence. There is also a sink on the side where people can wash clothes or dishes. This is actually a step up.
